Vikram Bhatt has emerged the most successful brand in the horror genre. In fact, it won’t be erroneous to state that what Karan Johar is to candy floss, Vikram Bhatt is to horror. If one looks at Vikram’s bodyof work, the talented storyteller has taken upon himself to petrify and frighten the moviegoers over and over again. RAAZ, 1920, SHAAPIT, HAUNTED, DANGEROUS ISHHQ, RAAZ 3… now 1920 – EVIL RETURNS. This time, of course, Vikram hands over the directorial reins to Bhushan Patel.
Let’s put this on record: 1920 – EVIL RETURNS is not connected, in any way, with the first part. The plot, thecharacters, the set of actors, the setting, everything is diverse. One expects 1920 – EVIL RETURNS to be crammed with chills and bloodcurdling moments. Also, in a film of this genre specifically, the conclusion to the tale has to be mostcompelling… and of course, spooky. But the problem with 1920 – EVIL RETURNS is that it appeals in bits andspurts. Not in totality. More on that later…
1920 – EVIL RETURNS narrates the story of Jaidev [Aftab Shivdasani], a well-known poet, who lives with hissister Karuna [Vidya Malvade]. One fine morning, Jaidev spots Smruti [Tia Bajpai] lying unconscious near the lake and gets her home. Karuna is against Jaidev’s decision of bringing a stranger home. A few episodes later, Jaidev realizes that Smruti has lost her memory and doesn’t remember anything except his poems.
Jaidev decides to get Smruti treated in Shimla. En route, while resting in the guest house, strange developments start taking place. Jaidev realizes that Smruti is possessed by a spirit.
1920 – EVIL RETURNS may be Bhushan’s first tryst at directing a movie, but the director knows the grammar of film-making right. His handling of the terrifying moments is the best part of the enterprise. Note the sequence soon after the interval or the long-drawn climax and you’ll realize that Bhushan knows what he’s talking about.
So where’s the hitch, did you ask. It’sthe writing that vacillates between engaging and yawn-inducing moments. Like I pointed out earlier, the portions depicting Tia [when sheis possessed] are remarkable. Those sequences take the film to another level, actually. Conversely, the love story [between Aftab-Tia] is far frompersuasive, the hate story [between Aftab-Sharad Kelkar] looks phony, the flashback [between Vidya-Sharad] is strictly okay, while the spate of songs that keep showing upat regular intervals add to the woes.
Bhushan retains the clichés that are mandatory while attempting a horror film [creaking doors, isolated mansions, long and abandoned passage and hallway], which is fine. Also, to give the credit where it’s due, a few episodes do startle you aswell. But how one wishes the writers [Vikram Bhatt, Amin Hajee] would’ve spun a compelling tale. Thefirst hour barely moves, while the post-interval portions work partially. Also, the soundtrack [Chirantan Bhatt], though good, is a waste in a film like this. Ideally, this should’ve been a songless film.
The background score is strictly okay, while the makeup and prosthetics deserve strong mention. The cinematography is stunning, with the DoP capturing the beauty of Sweden delightfully on celluloid.
Aftab looks too mellow for the part. The fire that one associates with the lead protagonist is missing. It’s up toTia to pull off the act of a possessed woman with flourish. An extremely talented actor, Tia is the soul of the film, displaying sensitivity [where required] and scaring the daylights of you [when needed]. Vidya Malvade doesn’t get much scope, though she does a decent job. Sharad Kelkar’s character could’ve been convincing, hence the limitations in his performance. The actor, who has the premonition about the spirit and warns Aftab about it, is effective.
On the whole, 1920 – EVIL RETURNS scares and shocks in bits and spurts. The film rides on Vikram Bhatt’s brand, more so after the super success of RAAZ 3, but its writing plays the spoilsport.

Daniel Craig is making a return as James Bond for the third time with ‘Skyfall’. The movie has released today in India in a big way, with huge expectations. Judy Dench, Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes accompany Daniel Craig in this action flick. Sam Mendes has directed the movie. Let us see how Skyfall is.
Story :
British Secret Service MI6 and its boss M (Judy Dench) have a major crisis on their hands as a top secret hard drive is stolen by a very wily enemy. The drive contains the names of all deep cover agents currently working against terrorist organizations.
The enemy this time is not a foreign power. Rather, it is one of their own.MI6 and M are caught off guard as former 00 agent Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) wreaks destruction within the agency and personally targets M. The head of British Intelligence and the agency itself come in for some scathing criticism from the public and the Parliament.
M must now turn to her most trusted and capable agent, 007 a.k.a.James Bond. But does Bond have it inhim to take on this masterful enemy? Is he still the lean and mean fighting machine that he was? That, needs to be seen on the big screen.
Plus Points :
The movie has surprisingly well written dialogues and is actually a gripping drama. The characters are well etched and there is a good amount of old fashioned intrigue in this spy drama. Daniel Craig delivers a fantastic performance as James Bond. Personally, I feel he is almost as good as Sir Sean Connery when it comes to portraying Bond.
Judy Dench has a very crucial role in this movie, unlike other Bond flicks. In fact, the story revolves completelyaround M, the character which she has portrayed with great finesse. Ralph Fiennes lends good support.
Javier Bardem is a very intelligent villain. His fight is more cerebral than physical. He has carried off his character’s dandy appearance with ease.
There are a few memorable scenes in the film – The opening bike chase sequence, the scene where the vintage Aston Martin is revealed and the climax scenes.
Minus Points :
The biggest issue I have with this Bond flick is that it is not a Bond flick. It is a good spy drama, no doubt about it. But when you say James Bond, what comes to mind? Beautiful women, flashy cars, exotic locales, grand action set pieces and, gadgets. You will not find any of these in ‘Skyfall’. The best gadget Bond has in this movie is a Walther PPK that works only with his finger prints. How lame is that?
The pace of narration dips a number of times in the film and for traditional Bond fans who seek action packed entertainment, the film will be boring at times.
Despite Javier Bardem’s menacing introduction, his organization and apparatus are never really shown. Hestrikes too easily and with impunity at the heart of MI6 on multiple occasions and how he does this is never realistically established.
MGM had financial troubles while filming Skyfall. This is very evident inthe movie. There is no grandness in the proceedings.
Technical Aspects :
Cinematography by Roger Deakins issuperb. He really comes into his ownonce the film shifts to Scotland. Editing could have been better. Adele’s title song is good and so is Thomas Newman’s background score.
Sam Mendes has succeeded in delivering a gritty spy drama. But has he succeeded in delivering an entertaining Bond film? I would say no.
Verdict :
If you watch Skyfall without expectations, it is a decent spy drama.Here, James Bond is old, wise and mature. He thinks intelligently, acts rationally and does not use gadgets. Do you want to see that kind of Bond? Perhaps, Sam Mendes tried to portray Bond in a more realistic light. But then, realistic espionage is actually boring. Many generations of movie lovers have a deep fascination for James Bond because he gets away with things that we can only dream of. I want that Bond back. Movie Rating – 3/5

Analysis:
Lucky telugu movie First half of the film starts with the introduction of major characters and few comedy scenes. Remaining scenes in the first half are boring. Interval scene is interesting. Second half is complete boring scenes. Director lacks clarity in entire movie.
Performances:
Srikanth has decent performance in the role of Lakshmi Narayana. He carried the entire film on his shoulders. showing all kinds of emotions which are required in this movie. Meghana Raj playing the female lead. Meghana Raj role was short, she didn’t look like heroine even in one frame throughout the film. Brahmanandam and AVS tried to bring few laughs in the theater. Roja role as Srikanth ’s boss is fine onscreen.
Technicalities:
Lucky Director Hari - His story, screenplay and direction are biggest minus for this movie. Srinivas Reddy's camera work, Sai Kartik's Music are average. Nagi Reddy's editing is not good. Production values for a senior hero like Srikanth cannot be sensed anywhere in this movie.
