Congress’ Muslim quota promise under EC scanner

Farrukhabad: The Election Commission is likely to issue a notice to Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid in connectionwith his remarks on Muslim quota, made on Monday during a poll meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad Assembly constituency from where his wife Louise is contesting.
Wooing Muslim voters, Khurshid has yesterday said that the Congress party would provide nine percent sub-quotafor backward Muslims if it wasvoted to power in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Taking strong exception to Khurshid’s remarks, highly placed sources said the Commission would soon issue a notice seeking the minister’s reply on the breach of model code of conduct.
However, the panel would takeaction only after it receives the minister’s response.
The development comes after the BJP today complained to the poll panel today about Khurshid’s remarks.
It may be noted that politicians are not allowed to make such announcements when the model code of conductis in force in poll-bound states.
Khurshid had said that the Congress would provide nine percent reservation for backward Muslims within the existing OBC quota in UP in the event of its forming the government in the state.
He said more than eight castes such as Mansoori and Qureshi would benefit from such a move.
He reminded the voters that the UPA government at the Centre had already taken a decision to provide 4.5 percent reservation for minorities within the existing 27 percent OBC quota.
